What is children's dentistry?

Dentistry for children involves caring for children in a dental environment. If they need any procedures done, the dentist would take care of them, or even a hygienist can handle some of the issues, such as cleanings.

Why is it important for children to establish good habits in relation to dental visits and the dentist?

Most people have had some kind of experience when they were children, which is probably why many don't like going to the dentist. Even dentists often don't like going to the dentist because they were once children visiting the dentist. The situation today is much different. Visits are much lighter and less painful.

Establishing a relationship with the dentist and making it a habit for a child to go to the dentist means they'll be comfortable with their dentist throughout their life. This approach prevents the need for significant dental work later on. When the work is light, and they just need to come for a check-up and receive a prize at the end, everyone enjoys the visit. Even adults would love it.

What should a child's dental routine consist of at home?

Ideally, a child should brush their teeth after each meal. If that's not possible, brushing at least in the morning and at night is important. The best routine is brushing after breakfast in the morning and then before bed. Most children brush before bed, but morning brushing is also essential, especially after breakfast, not before.

After sleeping all night without eating, brushing in the morning cleans out everything consumed after breakfast. The routine should include brushing, flossing, and sometimes rinsing with a fluoride rinse or mouthwash. These practices help prevent cavities and establish good habits for the child.

While children should be encouraged to brush and floss themselves, adult supervision is crucial, especially before they get their first set of teeth. If teeth emerge around 5 and a half months, it's advisable to have the infant examined before that time. As they grow, seeing the dentist every six months ensures teeth come in correctly.

How does the dental office make dental visits comfortable for children?

Initially, we take some pictures and play with the children to get them comfortable in the chair. We can allow the parent to be in the room to help them feel more at ease. They receive cleanings and an examination during the first visit, which is designed to be very light and short, as children tire quickly. The speed of service is important to ensure they don't get tired of us.

What dental issues are most common among children?

The most common issues are the need for cleanings and often cavities that we detect. Addressing cavities early makes them easier to manage.

Why would a dentist recommend a root canal or pulpotomy for a child's teeth?

This would be recommended if a cavity reaches the nerve tissue. In such cases, we need to remove part of the infected nerve and seal everything up. This allows the child's baby tooth to remain until the adult tooth pushes it out, preserving the space for the upcoming adult tooth and assisting in chewing food.

When do children lose their baby teeth?

Starting at about 5 and a half years of age, the lower anterior incisors usually start coming out first. This process continues up until age 12.

What should I do if my child chips a tooth?

If a child chips a tooth, it's best to bring them to the dentist immediately. The urgency depends on the size of the chip, but the sooner a dentist can see the child, the better the chances for a non-dramatic procedure.

What anesthesia options are available for children's dental procedures?

The options depend on the procedure needed. It could range from a topical anesthesia like a cream to full sedation to ensure the child is comfortable during the procedure.
